n8n Silent Failure Watchdog: Workflow Monitoring & Alerts Template (Telegram, Email, Slack)

Know when an n8n workflow fails, stops running, or runs green without doing its job, before your client tells you.

n8n’s Error Workflow only fires when a run starts and throws an error. It stays silent when a trigger stops firing, a webhook is no longer called, a run hangs, or a run “succeeds” with nothing in it. The Silent Failure Watchdog is one n8n workflow you import into your own n8n that catches those.

What it detects

• 🔴 Failing: the last run failed or crashed
• 🟠 Overdue: no run within the interval you expect (tag a workflow every:1h, every:1d…)
• 🟡 Stuck: a run has been running for too long
• 🟣 No outcome (optional): a green run where your key node (e.g. “Add to CRM”) produced nothing

Alerts you won’t learn to ignore

• Telegram, email, Slack, Discord or any webhook
• One alert per problem, a reminder every 6 h while it lasts, a ✅ message when it recovers
• A daily digest of every watched workflow, with links straight to the failed run
• One-click test run that sends a full report

What’s inside (ZIP)

• Main workflow (JSON) + example configuration
• Installation Guide, Configuration Guide, Troubleshooting Guide, Testing Checklist (PDF)

Requirements

• Your own n8n: self-hosted (Community Edition is fine) or n8n Cloud on a paid plan (the API is not available during the Cloud trial)
• An n8n API key and one alert channel
• Setup: about 15 minutes. You only add tags to your workflows; it never changes them (read-only)

Honest notes

• Tested end-to-end on n8n 2.25.7 (self-hosted) with webhook alerts: 35 scenarios. Telegram and email use standard n8n nodes; the Testing Checklist shows how to check them on your instance.
• It can’t tell you n8n itself is down (a workflow can’t report its own server’s death): use the optional free heartbeat (Healthchecks.io) for that.
• Up to 250 watched workflows per watchdog. Alerts contain names, statuses and links, never your data.
